SharpTremor - A new Quake Engine

KleskBY 0 201
SharpTremor is a Quake source port written in C# on .NET that packages LibreQuake so a registered copy of Quake is not required, while still auto-detecting Steam and GOG installations of the retail game. The 26.08 build, published on 27 August 2026, is described by the author as a smaller download with fewer bugs, and supersedes the original 26.06 release from 22 June 2026, which is now marked unsupported. The engine s central feature is an integrated map acquisition system comparable to Quake Injector in Mark V and FTE. Maps are downloaded and launched without the user handling archives, readmes, folder paths, launchers or configuration files, and the engine records which maps have been completed so that repeats are avoided. The author states that more than 8,300 secrets are available across the full downloaded map set, and that a single key press (joincoop) opens access to a further body of maps.Presentation options include a dynamic QuakeWorld-style HUD alongside classic HUD variants, a Retro Video Mode emulating 320x200 8-bit DOS Quake, and a Vanilla GLQuake Mode that adjusts sixteen cvars and reinstates hardcoded 1996 behaviours such as view-angle clamping and startup demo playback. Save handling defaults to respawning at the point of death, with conventional saves plus auto-continue, auto-save, auto-load and auto-delete also supported. Gamepad support extends to console access and command history navigation via the D-pad.The development angle is unusual for a Quake port: the source code is embedded inside the executable, the dependency chain can be installed and the project compiled from the engine console using three commands, and both engine and game code support hot reload on file save. The author suggests the C# codebase could serve as a starting point for porting Quake to Unity or Godot. The build targets Windows x64 and has been reported working under Proton and Wine, with a native Linux build considered feasible once a dependency is upgraded.Following a licensing challenge in the mod comments, the author documented four content categories in use: maps that are public domain or redistributable unmodified with attribution, LibreQuake under BSD-3, and borrowed engine and game source under GPL and MIT with the required notices and credits retained in the manual.
